A rally aimed at bringing back former President Mahinda Rajapaksa to
active politics after the dissolution of the Parliament in April is to
be held this Wednesday (February 18) in Nugegoda.

The National Freedom Front (NFF), the MEP and the Democratic Left Front
(DLF) want the SLFP to declare Mahinda Rajapaksa as the UPFA’s Prime

the Nugegoda rally was able to attract 5000 people he would quit active
politics,

WP Chief Minister pledges support for Nugegoda rally
MR’s spokesman responds to erroneous reports.

Western province Chief Minister Prasanna Ranatunga yesterday declared
that he would participate at today’s Nugegoda meeting organised by some
of UPFA’s constituents calling for former President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s
return to active politics.

The National Freedom Front (NFF), the MEP and the Democratic Left Front
(DLF) want the SLFP to declare Mahinda Rajapaksa as the UPFA’s prime
ministerial candidate.

Ranatunga said that he couldn’t turn his back on the former President
after having faithfully supported his recent presidential election
campaign.

Ranatunga pointed out that the likes of Azath Sally had ridiculed the
former President by claiming that the Nugegoda meeting wouldn’t attract
even 5,000 persons.

Meanwhile, former President’s spokesman Mohan Samaranayake told The
Island yesterday that various interested parties had been propagating
lies to undermine Rajapaksa’s political career. Samaranayake emphasised
that there was absolutely no basis for recent speculative reports that
the former President had confided to some close associates that he
wasn’t keen to continue in politics.

Referring to a letter dated Feb. 14 sent by the former President to the
SLFP Central Committee, Samaranayake said that the veteran politician
had stated in no uncertain terms that he remained with the party and
wouldn’t desert supporters under any circumstances. (SF)

Azath Sally should resign and deliver the promise he has given to people!

Truth vs Hype: Sri Lanka - hope or illusion? Full autonomy to Tamil areas - Ranil

#SriLanka #RanilWickremasinghe promised autonomy to #Tamil areas #NDTV reports. #MY3 reforms should take place in April 2015 with new parliament.

Here is a full transcript of the interview of NDTV and PM Ranil Wicremasinghe and TNA leader R Sambandan (below NDTV transcript of Ranil) where the coalition partners have disputes in Tamil demands.

Here the controversial Tweet of #NDTV: "In principle, we have agreed to full autonomy to Tamil areas, Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe tells NDTV"  The question arise here is who gave mandate to Ranil Wickremasinghe to give full autonomy to Tamils in North and East of Sri Lanka? People of Sri Lanka elected President #MaithripalaSirisena (#MY3) for #GoodGovernance, #Democracy and #AntiCorruption. Current parliament is not elected by #MY3 manifesto. If PM Ranil wants to decide future of Sri Lanka giving self autonomy to Tamil people he must be re-elected by people on #MY3 manifesto to parliament and win majority of votes in parliament to become as PM. Then only he can promise self autonomy to Tamil people. If he acts as a dictator in his PM capacity without consulting his coalition partners, he is mere another dictator. People will decide the fate of such dictators. Ranil Wickremasinghe once gave self autonomy to Tamils in 2002 and we as peace loving Sri Lankans saw how self autonomy worked in North and East. Tamils formed a separate state in Sri Lanka. We dont want that happen again!

NDTV: Many believe that Maithripala Sirisena's dramatic victory in the Sri Lanka elections would not have been possible were it not for the support of Ranil Wickramasinghe, one of the most seasoned politicians in Sri Lanka and who's now back as Prime Minister for the third time- sworn in almost immediately after President Sirisena took charge. Thank you very much indeed, Mr Wickramasinghe for joining me and is that a fair assessment, that without you Sirisena would not have won? You are the true kingmaker of this election?

Ranil Wickramasinghe: The kingmakers are the people who wanted a change. They didnt want a king, they wanted a president and the abolishment of the executive presidency. So we decided to have a common candidate. The UNP was the largest party in the opposition and certainly ran the organisations on the ground outside the northern province.

NDTV: But you know the change many believe came peacefully, except news came that actually there was an attempted coup by former president Rajapaksa. Now you actually came to visit him here at Temple Trees, the official residence, early  that morning, where he finally conceded. Did he concede immediately or was there some sort of planned coup?

Ranil Wickramasinghe: President Rajapaksa sent me a message, wanting me to give him a telephone call . that he had lost the elections. I replied that I will come there and discuss the transition with him rather than do it over the phone. So when i came here, President Rajapaksa conceded defeat and we discussed the details of the transition.

NDTV: He didn't put up a fuss or anything?

Ranil Wickramasinghe: No there was no fuss when he met me, no.

NDTV: But you know the fact is that many believe that you are going to be the real power behind this throne; this is actually going to be a Ranil Wickramasinghe government, not a Sirisena government. Is that true?

Ranil Wickramasinghe: Well we have made Mr Maithripala Sirisena the President and the parties constituting the government will run that jointly. We want to bring an Amendment to the Constitution this month to abolish executive presidency. Then in June, most probably May or June, we'll hold parliamentary elections and the people can decide who should be the Prime Minister and head the government.

NDTV: Okay. You're saying that you're a transitionary government but many believe that it's a Wickramasinghe government because all the cabinet ministers are from your party.

Ranil Wickramasinghe: No the major party as I said was the UNP so therefore the major number of ministers are from the UNP. But, we did set apart a number of ministries to be offered to the members who supported President Rajapaksa in the SLFP.

NDTV: Now let's look at three big issues which India is concerned about. Number one is whether you will grant full autonomy to the Tamils or will that just remain a promise on paper?

Ranil Wickramasinghe: Well the agreement is that the 13th Amendment be implemented,  and that's the discussion we are having with the TNA. In principle all have agreed that the 13th Amendment should be implemented.

NDTV: You're okay with that?

Ranil Wickramasinghe: We are with that. We're only having discussions about the police powers and how it should function, that's all.

NDTV: But that's the key thing.

Ranil Wickramasinghe: No, police powers is a provincial subject but there are certain concerns Once we bring the independent commission in, how do we do that? To ensure that..there is big fear in the country, not only the North, that the nine ministers.. chief ministers may turn the police into their own private army. We're all concerned, even the TNA is aware of it, so we've got to have safeguards against it

NDTV: But you're not in principle against it? You're not in principle averse to granting full powers?

Ranil Wickramasinghe: The 13th Amendment will be implemented in full and then there's a question not only of an independent police commission; there's going to be independent public service commissions. So how that relates to the provinces also has to be discussed.

NDTV: The second is of course to do with the exaggerated pro China tilt by the Rajapaksa government. Will you rectify that? Because that's a matter of great concern for India.

Ranil Wickramasinghe: As far as we are concerned we will continue the tradition of a policy of friendship with India while we maintain our friendship with China, Japan and the other countries.

NDTV: But do you agree that the tilt towards China had gone a little too far during the Rajapaksa time? A lot of contracts were signed.

Ranil Wickramasinghe: I have always said that President Rajapaksa's regime tried to play China against India and India against China and they came a cropper.

NDTV: But what about the contracts? Many of these projects that Rajapaksa had signed during his time. The president was funded by the Chinese. You yourself have asked for investigations into some of them.

Ranil Wickramasinghe: We are looking into all foreign contracts and local ones and where there is corruption, we will certainly ensure we take action whether it be Chinese or any other country. We are also reviewing the port city project because we have not yet seen the feasibility study and the environment impact assessment. I asked..when i was with the opposition, I asked the government to table it in parliament. They didn't do so. Therefore we will have to look into the environmental and feasibility aspects.

NDTV: You will be looking into that? Do you believe there was corruption there?

Ranil Wickramasinghe: We're looking mostly into the two reports. Then we will know whether there has been corruption or not.

NDTV: What about the question of prosecution of war crimes?

Ranil Wickramasinghe: Our position has always been that whatever we do has to be within our domestic jurisdiction.

NDTV: So you're saying no international probe is going to be allowed?

Ranil Wickramasinghe: No, we're saying the jurisdiction to try any person who's committed a crime lies with Sri Lanka.

NDTV: So your stand remains the same as the previous government? A UN probe is not welcome; you will do your own  internal probe?

Ranil Wickramasinghe: No, UN can give its probe. We'll engage the UN on these issues. That's the difference. We're going to engage the UN Human Rights Council on these issues. All we're saying is any criminal jurisdiction must be exercised in Sri Lanka. Any civil jurisdiction has to be exercised in Sri Lanka. Only the Sri Lankan courts can determine this issue. The same as India or USA. We are no different from anyone else but we will restore the independence of the judiciary.

NDTV: Okay, but you concede that these war crimes did take place?

Ranil Wickramasinghe:  Whatever the violations of human rights, we are looking into it. Anyway, the UN is going to send its own reports so there after we will decide what we're going to do. But we will have engagement and the UN report is not about going to the international criminal court. It's about whether violations took place or not.

NDTV: Is Sri Lanka essentially a unitary state? A Sinhala state? Or is it a state that includes all its people? This is a concern that was there with the previous regime. There are concerns whether there's going to be any change in that position.

Ranil Wickramasinghe: The 13th Amendment is on the basis of the present Constitution which India has accepted.  It's unitary and it's Sri Lankan. It's a country for Sinhalese, Tamils, Muslims, everyone. And that is accepted by everyone here.

NDTV: Will former president Rajapaksa face justice for the charges that have been leveled by you during the campaign or has there been some kind of a deal that has been done?

Ranil Wickramasinghe: Yeah, we are looking into everything and if we need to take action, we will take action.

NDTV: You will? And right now what would you say is your single biggest challenge as Prime Minister?

Ranil Wickramasinghe: Our challenge now is first to get the Constitutional Amendments through.

NDTV: Right

Ranil Wickramasinghe: And to give the relief to the people and restore democracy.

NDTV: Right. Prime Minister, I wish you all the very best. It's a challenging time for Sri Lanka, but a remarkable one. Thank you.

Story First Published: January 18, 2015 22:31 IS

NDTV: One of the reasons credited for President Sirisena's (#MaithripalaSirisena) victory was the fact that  the coalition of Tamil Parties known as the #TNA (#TamilNationalAlliance) came out and endorsed him (#MiathripalaSirisena) at the very last minute leading to an over whelming vote for him in the Tamil areas of the North and the East of Sri Lanka. But are you convinced that that is going to result in this finally bein able to meet the demands of the Tamil population of Sri Lanka which is concrete greater autonomy?

SAMBANDAN: We have discussed it (Autonomy to Tamils) with the President after the election. Other political leaders in the alliance are aware of the Tamil position.

NDTV: What did he (President Sirisena) say when you spoke to him?

NDTV with TNA Leader R Sambandan
SAMBANDAN: I think he is positive.. I am not... eh... saying that.. eh... he would... eh..  do everything possible and.. eh.. that eh,, I am confident that he'll (President Sirisena) come up with an excellent scheme of devolution or what ever...

NDTV: What's that meaning?

SAMBANDAN: We want something more credible..

NDTV: So, then you are talking about something?

SAMBANDAN: which would give us power in the areas of our competence...

NDTV: Which is? like what?

SAMBANDAN: Jurisdiction and subvention of what sense. We will take care in the provinces in a manner that will enable  the provinces where adequate measures of self rule (for Tamils) regarding matters of economic concerns, social concerns, cultural concerns, political concerns,

NDTV: So police power, land power... all that?

SAMBANDAN: Of course YES.

THAT MEANS:

-FULL AUTONOMY TO TAMIL PEOPLE WAS DEMANDED BY TNA AND AGREED BY #MY3 COALITION.
-RANIL WICKREMASINGHE AND MAITHRIPALA SIRISENA HAVE AGREED TO ABOLISH  13A AND ABOLISH EXECUTIVE PRESIDENCY.

Many outside powers tried to rule Sri Lanka - President MR

While claiming that Sri Lanka will not allow a single inch of the land to be taken away, President Mahinda Rajapaksa today said that in the four years since humanitarian victory there were many strategies tried out by some outside forces to rule Sri Lanka.

“There will be no room for separation, President Rajapksa said addressing the Humanitarian Victory Parade at Galle Face green this morning.

“The armed racist terrorism that existed for several years was used to control our country in the way that external forces wanted to. Foreign forces and pressures, foreign invasions are not new to us. In the four years since this great humanitarian victory there were many strategies tried out by these forces to rule our Motherland. These included the Arab Spring, grease demons, the independent of the Judiciary, media freedom and human rights. There were attempts to make us file answers to such charges almost every six months. It is these sinister aims that are put forward as the protection of human rights and democracy. However, what is hidden below this is the expectation to break up this country,” he said.

“I believe that the feeling that we should all live together in a single country is once again emerging in the hearts of the Tamil people,” President Rajapaksa said.
Prabhakaran and his cohorts destroyed the erudite society that could build the culture of the Tamil people of the north. Just as Prabhakaran, the political parties that are propping up the Diaspora are still engaged in an effort to drag Tamil society to destruction. As long as these groups exist the Tamil people need no other enemies, the President said.
The time has come for the people of the north to have a good understanding of the honesty of those who claim to speak on their behalf, President further added.

Full text of the speech :

Today we have the fourth opportunity to celebrate with dignity the great victory of our Motherland. Today we also commemorate another great moment in the history of Sri Lanka when our Motherland was united. It is also great the great moment when Sri Lanka was freed from the deadly fear of terror. With great sacrifice of lives by our people, we were able to liberate the largest number of hostages in the world held by the forces of terror. Today we remember all of this.

Friends,

We must bear in mind that thousands of heroes like this sacrificed their lives for the country to obtain this great victory. Many lakhs more offered their blood, sweat and tears and lost their eyes and limbs for this land. I am pleased to state that we have elevated all of you as high as the national flag flies to give you the honor you deserve.

In the midst of efforts by some to take our war heroes to an international scaffolding we have provided welfare benefits such as housing, schools, scholarships, income sources, facilities such as the Mihindu Seth Medura and Abimansala for the benefit of their families, their children and their parents. We have carried out such services for our war heroes to encourage those citizens in the future who think of making a commitment to the future of the country, and to give them the confidence and strength to do so.

If one is to fully understand the great service provided by these heroes we must recall how the people of this country lived before May 2009. There was no freedom at that time to walk freely at Galle Face Green where you are gathered today. It was the time when even the Galle Face Green was also closed. The LTTE was able to destroy the Central Bank building that you can see from here, and also send a bomb laden lorry right before the residence of the Head of the State. The hotels around this area were destroyed by bomb attacks.

We recall that the Tigers who attacked the Sri Maha Bodhi in Anuradhapura in 1985 later came to Colombo and attacked with bombs and killed the NayakaThero at the Fort Buddhist temple. In 1990 the Tigers killed hundreds of worshippers at the Kathankudy mosque, and their ability to strike and spread throughout the country that 19 years laterthey attacked a religious procession at the MataraGodapitiya mosque. Minister MahindaWijesekera who was a victim of that attack is still bedridden.

Most places in this country were then identified by recalling bomb attacks by the LTTE such as the junction where ParamiKulatunga was killed, the place where Navy Commander Clarence Fernando was killed, the junction where Major Muthalif was killed, the street where Mr. Premadasa was killed, the place where Minister C. V. Gunaratne was killed and the house where Mr. Kadirgamar was killed.

At that time this was a country where fear of death was brought by a parcel that had no owner.

The Tigers were able to do as they wished at any place in the country. There was no place to escape or be safe from the Tigers.

There was no one who came to save the people of this country.

In 1977, the first Executive President of the country who had the power of a five-sixth majority told the people when they were under attack by the Tigers that they must look after their own safety . The next President who took office, ordered 700 policemen to surrender and betrayed them to the Tigers. They were killed by the Tigers. The Tigers were also given arms. He was also killed on the road.

The Tigers also killed in Tamil Nadu the Prime Minister of India who brought them for peace talks and gave the LTTE leader a bullet proof vest.

Subsequently, although a ceasefire agreement was signed with the intervention of several foreign countries, and a part of the country was betrayed to the forces of terror, those who were responsible for that agreement could not prevent bomb attacks in Colombo. All those who ruled the country at that time acted in this humiliating manner because they believed that the Tigers could not be defeated.

We were also told by the entire world not to clash with the Tigers. We were told to give what they wanted. If we too were so fearful and lowly we would still be living in a country where one is afraid of a parcel on the road.

Yet, we had complete faith in the heroism and strength of the youth of our country. That faith is in you. We had trust in the heroes who were born from the wombs of the mothers of our land and love the country. We believed that our young heroes had the strength to take this country from shame and defeatism to heroism. That is why this country is today a great nation that is free of the fear of death.

Whatever anyone forgets, or tries to make us forget, there is one thing I believe in. It is that this great victory was best felt in the hearts of our small children.

The children of the people in what were then called border villages, who sheltered to save their lives at night under the large leaves of habarala plants, and the children of the mothers who guarded the gates of their schools under the scorching sun, will take this story to the new generations. Our children will never let this part of our history be forgotten.

My dear children,

We know that those who had ceasefire agreements that betrayed the country to the Tigers are making every effort to make us forget the heroism of this nation. It is those who betrayed the country with the ceasefire agreement that during the same period, in 2003 proposed to the World Meteorological Organization that the name of our great king Mahasen who built 16 tanks should be used to name a great storm. All international media have mentioned cyclone Mahasen. Will those who sought to insult King Mahasen who was known as “MinneriDewiyo” for building the MinneriyaWewa, allow your great service to the nation to be recorded in history? Are we ready to forget such action?

Friends,

This era should be not go down in history as an era when we were warring, but an era when war was ended. Not as an era of murder and bloodshed, an era when tyre pyres were burning at every junction, but as an era when bloodshed was stopped. Similarly, this era should go down in history as one that carried out a major transformation to prevent the occurrence of war again.

Friends,

It is the people in the North and the East who would and should feel this most. Today, in the north and east of the country, there are twelve political parties carrying out their activities freely. However, all political parties that attempted to function freely at that time had to face the Tiger’s bullet. EROS, PLOTE, EPRLF, EPDP and TELO -- all of them suffered the same fate. The former leader of the Tamil United Liberation Front saved his life by living in Colombo. From Duraiappa to members of Parliament such as Amirthalingam, Sam Thambimuttu and his wife, and Raviraj – all were silenced forever.

Prabhakaran and his cohorts destroyed the erudite society that could build the culture of the Tamil people of the north. Just as Prabhakaran, the political parties that are propping up the Diaspora are still engaged in an effort to drag Tamil society to destruction. As long as these groups exist the Tamil people need no other enemies.

The time has come for the people of the north to have a good understanding of the honesty of those who claim to speak on their behalf.

You will know that after thirty years, we have given the opportunity to the fishermen of the north to earn their livelihoods freely at sea. However, when the fishermen of north go out to sea there are others who come and grab the fish that is found at that area. It is those who grab this wealth of the people of the north who seek to bring pressure on governments on behalf of the Tamil people of the north. The people of the north should be on their guard in the future too against such sinister protectors.

When three lakhs of hostages among the northern people came seeking their freedom there was no one to give even a packet of food to them other than the security forces, you and the government. The Diaspora that collects billions supposedly for the Tamil people did not come to serve their people at that time, they did not come to help the Sri Lankan Tamil people at that time.

Friends,

The opportunity has now been provided for more that 11,000 persons who were with the LTTE to be rehabilitated and live freely. These are people who had committed offences that could keep them for many years behind bars. Those whose crimes could take them the scaffold. In no other country will those who were associated with the most ruthless terrorist organization in the world obtain the pardon as they have received in Sri Lanka. I am aware that the youth in the north are happy about this pardon. Fair thinking people are also pleased with this.

As of now nearly 4000 Tamil youth have joined the Civil Defence Corps. They are now launching cultivation in thousands of acres of land and participating in the country’s economic development. Several thousand more are waiting in line to join the security forces and the police. Initially, it was not those in the South who opposed Tamil youth being taken to the Armed Forces. It was some persons in the north and leaders who were abroad who declined this. Thousands of youth in Kilinochchi recently took to the streets against the decision by the Human Rights Council in Geneva. This is a victory of victories.

I understand well and recall the hearts and minds of the people of the north and east. History shows that in the Presidential Election of 1982 the Tamil people of the north defeatedPonnambalam who stood for a separate state and elected Kobbekaduwa who was from the Sri Lanka Freedom Party.

I believe that the feeling that we should all live together in a single country is once again emerging in the hearts of the Tamil people.

Friends,

The armed racist terrorism that existed for several years was used to control our country in the way that external forces wanted to. Foreign forces and pressures, foreign invasions are not new to us. In the four years since this great humanitarian victory there were many strategies tried out by these forces to rule our Motherland. These included the Arab Spring, greasedemons, the independent of theJudiciary, media freedom and human rights. There were attempts to make us file answers to such charges almost every six months. It is these sinister aims that are put forward as the protection of human rights and democracy. However, what is hidden below this is the expectation to break up this country. Today we have a Sri Lankan nation that is sufficiently matured to understand this. Through the entirety of the past four years we had to struggle with these forces. It will be so in the future too. We will not allow a single inch of the land that you won by the sacrifice of your life to be taken away. There will be no room for separation.

Friends,

Before me today I see brave sons and daughters of Sri Lanka who are ready to sacrifice their lives for our Motherland. It is with great pride that I recall that through thousands of years past there were hundreds of thousands of brave people ready to sacrifice their lives for the Motherland. Even if all of us lose our lives for our Motherland, there will be thousands more who will come to take our place and sacrifice their own lives for this cause. This is the cause of our freedom and independence.

Friends,

I recall here the two lines of a poem I read this morning in a newspaper to be published tomorrow to mark this Humanitarian Victory Day. It said “Never did we know what fear was. Never were we bothered about life, but for our land.”

I pray that my Motherland will achieve victory through the strength of this truth

රජයේ දේශපාලකයෝ මහජන මුදලින් රතී ක්‍රීඩාවල

EXPOSE!!!
(උපුටා ගැනීම Gossip9.comApril 7, 2012).

US$ 50bn Chinese led private investment no misnomer

Ms Song Jianhua (SSLRI)
Ms Song Jianhua, Chairperson (SSLRI)
Source: Apr 4 (Island) . The Ministry of Industry and Commerce issuing a statement yesterday gave out more details on the proposed US$ 50 billion investment planned for the development of Hambantota, with a top official saying it was no misnomer. As Sri Lanka-China trade topped US$ 2.2 billion in 2011, an international port city in Hambantota region to compete with Singapore, is proposed by a Beijing based private investment group with no less thanUS$50 billion as envisaged project value. "We are looking at a 10 year timeline for the US$ 50 billion Hambantota Trade City Project on the Public Private Partnership model. We are planning to implement it with the support of international investment and financial institutions" said Ms Song Jianhua, Chairperson of Sino-Sri Lanka Rich Investment (SSLRI) yesterday, as quoted by the ministry.

Ms Song Jianhua led the 13 member Chinese Business delegation that arrived in Colombo as part of the overall 150 Chinese business delegation for the Sri Lanka Expo 2012 organised by the Export Development Board under the Ministry of Industry and Commerce. Her delegation comprised of powerful, state-of-art technology players in fertilizer, port development, energy, petro-chemistry, cement, and machinery.

Clarifying about the US$50 billion project value, which is seen by some analysts as almost equal to Sri Lanka’s annual GDP, the resourceful Ms Jianhua responded: "The US$ 50 billion value is no misnomer. This is a private public partnership at our end and we envisage an overall investment value of US$ 50 billion over 10-15 year period and we will proceed upon approval by the government of Sri Lanka. I am happy to inform you that this is not a sole Chinese entry-in fact it is a multinational effort in which investors from Singapore, Hong Kong and US are also joining the Chinese investors as lead investors. The main Chinese investors represent manufacturing and logistic sectors. But I should stress that the project timeline will also depend on the speed of approval."

Ms Jianhua added: "There will be other investments from us after the port city is established. Members of my delegation are also keen on real estate, black tea and jewellery once we process the port city. We also have the support of international investment and financial institutions. Most importantly, I believe that our efforts will boost Sri Lanka – China trade cooperation significantly" she added.

According to the Department of Commerce of Sri Lanka under the Ministry of Industry and Commerce, the total trade between Sri Lanka and China is on an upward trend. In 2011, the total bilateral trade value topped US$ 2239.43 million with the balance of trade in favour of China. Sri Lanka’s exports to China, although still at a lower level, have  increased from US$ 10.9 million in 2002 to US$  104.06 million in 2011 which is an achievement  considering the  fact   that only 8 Countries  in Asia including  Sri Lanka  were  able  to maintain  a positive Export  growth  to China compared  with  2008.

"It is too early to give specific details of the venture at the moment since we are in the initial stages" Ms Jianhua said and added: "We had a good experience during this visit to Sri Lanka and believe the country has investment promise. We are committed to creating jobs and promote economic growth in Sri Lanka with our financial strength."

India Responsible for Dividing Sri Lanka, Training LTTE Terrorists - JR ...

India Responsible for Dividing Sri Lanka, Training LTTE Terrorists - JR former SL President 1985. In 1985, during an Interview with BBC former President of Sri Lanka MR. J R Jayawardene says that India is training Tamil Tigers (LTTE terrorists) in India to capture Sri Lanka. India is accountable for more than 200,000 civilian deaths in Sri Lanka and directly  caused two civil wars (LTTE (1982-2009) & JVP (1988-1990) ) in Sri Lanka. The LTTE was defeated in 2009, still India causes Eelam tension in Sri Lanka by Tamil Nadu politicians and Tamils/ fishermen. video link

0:00 BBC:Rajiv (India PM) attempts to force him to sit down and negotiate with Tigers (LTTE terrorists).

0:06 JR: I think we can deal with them. But we need the sympathy of the world, we need the support of India. Because their (Tamil Tigers) training camps are in India, they have been trained in India, and they are operating from India. They move about freely in India. And I dont think they should allow to do that, to use violence against as a friendly state.

0:23 But thats how you feel about it. But within Sri Lanka you have no alternative BUT to fight the guerrillas until you defeat them militarily?

0:29 JR: Until they give up arms, yes. Nothing else I can do.

0:34 BBC: But the danger would be that in the process of defeating them militarily supposing that you can do it, then you are alienating a lot of Tamil opinion. Which at least these people are Tamils. No we dont want them to be killed.

0:44 JR: I dont think so. I think am not afraid of alienating Tamil opinion. I am afraid of alienating public opinion of the world, your country (British) and other countries including large section in India have a wrong impression of what is happening there (Sri Lanka) as an Ethnic conflict. It is not an ethnic conflict, it is a conflict of one people who wants to capture the "whole of Sri Lanka". Not a portion. "The whole of Sri Lanka" and make it a Marxist sate.

In 1987 Sri Lanka's former President Mr J.R.Jayewardene was pushed by India. India Invaded Sri Lanka's air apace by sending Kfir fighter jets dropping weapons (LTTE) and food to North-Eeast of Sri Lanka.

(New York Times, June 03, 1987) SRI LANKA THREATENS TO HALT INDIAN BOATS BEARING TAMIL RELIEF. Sri Lanka and India appeared headed for a confrontation tonight as the Government here ordered its armed forces to intercept a shipment of supplies from India to ethnic Tamils in the north.

Brushing off the Sri Lankan threats, India proceeded with preparations for the delivery of ''humanitarian assistance'' by an unarmed flotilla of 20 fishing boats scheduled to leave the southern Indian port of Rameswaram on Wednesday morning.

India said it had warships stationed on the Indian side of the Palk Strait, which separates the two countries, ready to move if the Sri Lankans tried to stop the shipment. ''If they try to stop those boats, God help them,'' an Indian official said.

Subsequent in August 1987, Sri Lanka had to agree with India due pressure on Sri Lanka and no support from International community. The prime minister of India Rajiv Gandhi came to Sri Lanka to bring about a solution to the Tamil armed problem which was ceated by India. Indo-Lanka Peace accord was signed in 1987 against the will of the nation and the Government. Rajiv Gandhi was hit by  Navy sailor's riffle butt while Rajiv was inspecting the Guard of Honour. As a result of Indo-Lanka Peace Accord (1987) the IPKF (Indian Peace Keeping Forces) was sent in to Sri Lanka by India. The peace accord was very unpopular among the Sri Lankan folks. A civil war erupted between Govt abd JVP in South killing over 60,000 Sinhalese people while LTTE war in North during 1988-1990).

In 1990 President Sri Lanka R. Premadasa and Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi were murdered by LTTE suicide bombers.

In 2009 under the presidency of Mahinda Rajapaksa Sri Lankan Security forces defeated LTTE and the day of victory was announces on 19th May 2009.

Speech: Sri Lanka 64th Independence Day - President Rajapaksa - 04 Feb 2012

04 Feb 2012. Sri Lanka. ශ්‍රී ලංකාව. President Rajapaksa's Speech on Sri Lanka's 64th Independence Day. video link  Bright Sri Lanka flags dotted every inch of the country yesterday to celebrate the country's Independence, especially the three-year-freedom gained after defeating the world's most ruthless terrorists -- the LTTE. It was a day when the whole of Sri Lanka stood as one nation to make a promise to collectively march towards a common goal - a new nation.
President Mahinda Rajapaksa, being the most committed leader in Lanka's recent history believed and proved that by defeating the LTTE was not impossible, requested the nation to value the freedom gained through many sacrifices at the main function held in Anuradhapura to celebrate the 64th Independence Day. "You know freedom is an immense responsibility for us today. During the war previous governments could blame everything on the war and escape. However, the people who reached peace after war expected to march from inefficiency to efficiency, from unemployment to employment, from impurity to purity and from backwardness to modernity.

The people who then forgot everything else and demanded a bunker for the village and a rifle to defend lives, today expect not only electricity, water, housing, highways, higher education but also a law abiding, clean and a modern Sri Lanka. What you requested me when I visited Kebithigollawa some time ago is different from what you request me today.

Therefore, during the three years after gaining freedom from terrorism we have been able to use that freedom to give the Motherland immense value, much more than that given during the half century since independence in 1948. Today we have built the country to that status when we could draw the map of the Motherland more proudly than then.We have still a long way to go. We have to give the rural people who comprises 80% of our population the results of giant development work that we have initiated in the country.
Challenge

It is not only an expectation but also a challenge which we are ready to take up", he said reiterating the government's committment for reconciliation.

"The government is committed to implement the recommendation of the LLRC report, which was stated that all groups are equally responsible for the ethnic conflict in the country.

Anyone who believes in their conscience must take this into account. We presented the learnings of the committee report on December 17 and within these six weeks we have worked our utmost to ensure that the recommendations are implemented," he said."The implementation of the proposals of any extremist group won't be useful to the country. We want permanent and sustainable peace and we are committed to this vision. Any race or ethnic group does not belong to a different province or city.

The country belongs to all races and ethnicities alike," he said. In his message he said : "Our nation is fortunate to celebrate the 64th Independence Day with a genuine sense of dignity about freedom.

The way is open for an independent economy. It daily reinforces the nation's aspiration for a prosperous future.

White Flag Case Verdict: General Fonseka Rejects Unfair Judgment (18 Nov 2011)

Original post source Sunday Times: Amidst Fonseka furore MR faces vital issues: (Sunday November 20, 2011)
"Don't the people have the right to speak?...it is an unfair judgment... I reject this judgment with disgust... If the people accept that injustice was done to me... I call upon them to rise against injustice... I salute the judge who held that I was not guilty of the charges. His bravery is an honour to the judiciary" General Sarath Fonseka was convicted and sentenced to three more years in jail and fined Rs 5,000. He was to serve a further six months if the fine was not paid. The sentence on Fonseka will run consecutively after he completes his present 30 month jail term.

Three-member bench -- Deepani Wijesundera (presiding), with Zulficar Razeen and W.T.M.P.B. Warawewa -- convened at 11.30 a.m., Friday 18 Nov 2011.

Two judges (Ms. Wijesundera and Razeen) had found Fonseka guilty of the first count -- violating the emergency regulations (since withdrawn) by telling Frederica Jansz, Editor of The Sunday Leader, that Defence Secretary, Gotabaya Rajapaksa had ordered (then) Brigadier Shavendra Silva not to let any Tiger rebels waving white flags "to surrender and kill them all." This was during the final stages of the war in May 2009.

-Second charge: he had, by making those remarks "aroused communal feelings directly or indirectly."
-Third count: "arousing anti-government feelings among the public and creating disputes among them."
-A dissenting judgment by Warawewa who had ruled that Fonseka was not guilty of all three charges.

Only Gotabhaya thought a military victory was possible – Erik Solheim (video)

Eric Solheim made this remarks last week in Oslo seminar followed by the launch of the evaluation report of the Norwegian Peace effort in Sri Lanka. The evaluation has been performed by CMI in Bergen and the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) in London, and deals with the Norwegian peace effort in Sri Lanka between 1997 and 2009.

Gothabaya Rajapaksa the only exception

No one. Maybe with the exception of Gothabaya Rajapaksa but he’s the only person I can mention who thought a military victory was possible.

No one in Colombo thought it was possible, I was very hard to say very close to Indian intelligence and an enormous amount of time throughout this process and never, ever did any Indian official hint that a military victory was possible until mid 2008. Then they started, I observed the change in Mr.M.K.Narayanan and other s and gradually shift into the position that maybe, still maybe the government can wipe out the tigers military victory.

If Karuna was not split, it was not, I think, in the invertible, it was basic from personal characteristics, not very nice, but it was what happened and it made an enormous change .

My Dear Tamil People - A Call From Imprisoned Canadian Tamils to Tamil Diaspora

" My dear Tamil people all over the world, Let us not even for a second talk about arms again. War is not the answer to anything.... We incorrectly believed that violence could achieve the goals that we sought... We now realize that what we did was not helpful in leading to a positive resolution of the issues that existed in Sri Lanka.” (from prison cell by Canadian Tamils)

US Wikileaks Reveals Very Effective Diplomatic Approach By Sri Lanka in May 2009- Dr. Dayan Jayatillea

(By Dr Dayan Jayatilleka) The threat of a resolution against Sri Lanka in March in Geneva, the speech by Canada’s Foreign Minister at the UNGA, the lobbying within the Commonwealth, the statement by the UK Labour Party’s Shadow Foreign Secretary, the remarks of the Swiss Federal Attorney General on Gen. Dias, the legal moves in the US and Europe against Lankan soldier-diplomats, and in the EU arena to legalise the LTTE, are the spearheads of a multipronged strategic offensive.

President Mahinda Rajapakse. 66th United Nations General Assembly 23.09.2011

President Rajapaksa is competent and experienced to address the world body, United Nations General Assembly on terror and peace as the leader who successfully eradicated the menace of terror that engulfed Sri Lanka for over three decades, in a short span of three years when the world was watching in disbelief the winning of the war which they claimed to be unwinnable. There are many other mighty and small nations who have become victims of terror including the USA, Britain, France, Iraq, Afghanistan and many other nations. But Sri Lanka was attacked by the most powerful and feared terrorist organization which has tentacles worldwide. Though it is completely eradicated on the ground in Sri Lanka the front organizations worldwide are active and the network is functioning with enormous sums accumulated and with the help of the misguided diaspora.

True Facts of Sri Lanka War by Gotabaya

The full Speech of Sri Lanka's Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa at the launching of the report titled ‘Humanitarian Operation Factual Analysis’ July 2006 - May 2009 held on August 1 in Colombo.
"The purpose of today’s event is to officially release the report that has been compiled by the Ministry of Defence on the Humanitarian Operation. The purpose of this report is to set out the factual background and operational context, which brought peace to Sri Lanka by liberating our people from the brutal terrorism of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, the LTTE, in May 2009.

The report begins with a detailed analysis of the LTTE, including its true nature and its growth and sophistication over the years and the threat it posed to all Sri Lankans. The LTTE was a vicious terrorist group that suppressed democracy in the areas it dominated, killed all its rivals and assassinated moderate Tamil politicians and intellectuals and spread terror throughout Sri Lanka with its many attacks on innocent civilians. Raising funds through its international criminal network, the LTTE not only had the ability to use semi-conventional tactics on land, but also acquired sea and air dimensions to strengthen its offensive capability.

Top Three UN Officers Dodged Crimes By USA in IRAQ & Pinpointed Sri Lanka

AT THE DEBATE ON CIVILIAN PROTECTION AT THE UN SECURITY COUNCIL, THE MOST SENIOR UN OFFICERS (Ban Kimoon, Navi Pillai, John Homes) FORGOT U.S. ATROCITIES IN IRAQ AND PIN POINTED SRI LANKA. SRI LANKA DELEGATES SLAMMED FOR POLITICIZING CIVILIAN PROTECTION.

The guardians of human rights (UNHRC, UN) have double standards on atrocities against humanity. One standard is for USA, UK, EU (friends) and another standard for other nations. The credibility of UN has come down to zero due to step-motherly treatment by super powers. If the UN top most senior officers ignore super powers' war crimes just because those nations contribute more funds to run the UN, the existence of UN is is to legitimize western dictatorship in the world therefore international community should boycott United Nations. UN gen secretary Ban Ki-moon, Human Rights Commissioner Navi Pillai and John Holmes (Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator)have dodged human casualties in Iraq and finger pointed Sri Lanka during debate on Civilian Protection at UN Security Council. Dr. Palitha Kohana slammed for politicization and selectivity characterizing the debate on Civilian Protection at UN Security Council

JOHN HOLMES,
"Nevertheless, I fear all too little has changed for the better on the ground in recent years," he said, noting that civilians accounted for most casualties in armed conflict. In 2009 alone, there had been thousands of civilian deaths in Gaza, Sri Lanka, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Somalia and elsewhere; 2010 did not look much better. Displacement through conflict was getting worse, he said, recalling that 2009 had seen 6.8 million people internally displaced, more than at any point since the mid-1990s. Conflict had displaced an alarming total of 27.1 million people around the globe — the highest ever — at the end of 2009.

NAVI PILLAY
Recalling the conflict in Sri Lanka, she said there had been unacceptably high civilian losses caused by both sides, noting also that some progress had been made since the end of the conflict in returning and resettling internally displaced persons. Concrete initiatives must now follow to provide justice and redress to victims, while promoting accountability and longer-term reconciliation. She welcomed the Secretary-General's decision to set up an expert panel to advise him on the issues in Sri Lanka.

PALITHA KOHONA
( Sri Lanka) said that although a substantial normative framework had been developed for the protection of civilians, the politicization and selectivity characterizing the debate on implementation had affected its credibility, thereby calling into question the sincerity of the concerns expressed for the plight of civilians affected by armed conflict. The issue could not be addressed on humanitarian terms alone, and nor could the normative framework be applied in a merely theoretical manner.

He said that his country's experience in dealing with terrorists that used the civilian population as shields behind which to launch attacks showed the complexity of the challenges involved. Many of the rules of war were based on the presumption that parties to a conflict are conventional armies, but terrorists totally disregarded those laws and principles. The causes of armed conflict must also be addressed, including the proliferation of small arms and light weapons, he said, adding that there was also a need to recognize the legitimate role of the military in civilian protection, though it was not an exclusive one.

The principle of unimpeded access for humanitarian personnel must be respected, but it could not disregard the State's primary responsibility to ensure their safety and security, he said. In Sri Lanka's experience, the military, often at huge cost, had had to bring civilians out of harm's way, he said, adding that military and humanitarian personnel must therefore seek to work in partnership. Similarly, civilian displacement must not be politicized or turned into a theoretical problem, he said, calling for the development of a means for holding non-State actors accountable and recognizing the problems of asymmetrical conflicts.

The Handshake - Namal Rajapakse & General Fonseka

(Dialy Mirror Editorial, 01 July 2010)

The rush of emotions is obvious.

Though both General Fonseka and young Namal Rajapaksa looked a little diffident there was certainly no sign of regret. The handshake however would have brought back the memories of the good old days when the two families remained thick before the dark clouds of the present day saga overshadowed the recollections.Reportedly it was Namal who had first extended the hand to the former Army Commander and chances are that this move was much more spontaneous than the one made by his father on the nominations day. Rajapaksas, whatever others may say, know how to make the right moves at the right time and given the knack that the young Hambantota district MP has displayed in cultivating people so far, he is definitely picking the ropes faster than the father. One thing for sure. While it is quite courageous from the part of the young Namal to make the move it is also quite magnanimous of the General to reciprocate the gesture the way he has done as was seen in photos. He could have well afforded to cold shoulder Namal Rajapaksa however much undiplomatic it would have looked. Instead General Sarath Fonseka opted to be the gentleman. Perhaps he would have thought ‘what can he do about the work of the adults’.

The handshake came a few hours after the Court of Appeal dismissal of the writ application filed by the General against the second court martial set up against him. It was also on the same day that the BBC Sandeshaya quoted the former Army Commander as saying that he was prepared to meet the UN panel to advise Ban Ki-Moon on the alleged human rights violations by Sri Lanka. The General was also quoted as saying in the same story that he did not see the conditions imposed by the EU to renew the GSP plus concession as an ‘intervention of the internal affairs of the country’.

“The EU has demanded the release of political prisoners -- which includes me," he had said.

And all this at a time when President Rajapaksa and his ministers are going hammer and tongs, making mince meat out of the UN and the EU for their latest moves.

Had he not fallen out with the Rajapaksas, the General may not have gone for that public posturing on the UN and EU, one may say.

There are indeed a lot of ‘ifs’ and ‘buts’ in the saga.

However, nothing seemed to have mattered for the duo that shook hands in parliament. Together they made a beautiful picture in an extremely dull budget day.
